Material Molds: Burlap and Plaster Chair

Research related to the reuse of materials typically focuses on how a piece of material, once extracted from a given construction, can be transformed and reinserted into the built environment. This prototype considers the usefulness of pieces of material beyond the use of said materials in construction themselves. Instead, materials are used as molds for casting burlap and plaster composite. Materials were selected as molds either for their structural form or surface texture.2
Once materials were selected, they were 3D scanned using photogrammetry and configured into a predetermined design. The design simply serves as a loose set of instructions for how to compose the chair. This construction method has the potential to be deployed as a low tech solution for creating structural members or surfaces.
